Yerba Mate Tradicional Argentina, estacionada

1 kg

With stems, aged, smooth and balanced: the grind that Argentines and Syrians recognize.

Medium-size leaves made with stems and a balanced amount of fine powder, with aging that rounds out the flavor. It's the most widely used grind in Argentina, the base of the mate served in Syria and Lebanon, and the easiest one for beginners.

How to prepare it your way

Argentine-style mate

Argentine-style mate

  1. Fill the mate gourd three-quarters full with yerba mate.
  2. Cover with your hand, turn it mouth-down and shake, so the fine powder ends up on top.
  3. Lean the yerba mate against one wall of the gourd and wet the low part with warm water.
  4. Place the bombilla on the wet side and pour water between 70 and 80 °C, always in the same spot.
  5. The person serving drinks the first mate and passes the following ones along, one at a time.

Water: 70 to 80 °C

  1. Put one or two spoonfuls of yerba mate into a small glass ("kass").
  2. Set the bombilla ("masasa") in place and pour hot, not boiling, water from the kettle.
  3. Serve in small glasses and, if you like, scent it with an orange peel or a cardamom seed.
  4. Each person drinks from their own glass; the water goes back on the fire between rounds.

What this yerba mate does for you

Calm vitality

Plant composition

You take the first sip, and the vitality builds slowly and stays, without the spike and crash you get from coffee. It's the leaf's natural caffeine (about 70 to 80 mg per 150 ml cup) together with theobromine, the same substance found in cocoa. In the mate gourd, the cup or the latte, the effect is the same: a day with more presence.

The leaf's natural protection

Plant composition

Yerba mate leaf is naturally rich in polyphenols, especially chlorogenic acids, at levels comparable to green tea. These are the compounds that research links to protecting cells against oxidative stress. Leaf from a mature branch, like ours, holds more of them; in yerba mate matcha, you consume the whole leaf.

Yerba mate is a food, not a medicine. The information on benefits is educational, cites scientific sources and is not a substitute for the guidance of health professionals.
